View Jessica's BioHappy New Year! It’s time to do something about those New Year’s resolutions. This week, we have a few events to get you motivated. On Saturday, January 14, DCR’s Borderland State Park in Easton will have a DCR park ranger guide you on a frosty trek to explore the forest and identify winter trees, shrubs, and groundcover. DCR’s Blue Hills Reservation in Milton is hosting an event, also on Saturday, consisting of a brisk hour and a half long walk through pines and hemlocks.
If walks in the forest aren’t for you (or if they are too far away), join a DCR park ranger for a tour of the Charles River Dam and the facility that keep Boston and the neighboring areas dry. The tour will feature information about the dam itself, the history and engineering behind it, and how it constantly works to keep the Charles River from flooding its banks (even during high water events).
On Sunday, you can join local historians and park staff at DCR’s Walden Pond State Reservation for an annual program commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Visit with Henry David Thoreau (portrayed by historian Richard Smith) and ask him your questions regarding the night he spent in jail for not paying his poll tax, an act which inspired his famous essay, Civil Disobedience. Visitors will then head to the Tsongas Art Gallery to engage in a discussion of the writing of the essay, and learn how Martin Luther King Jr. used the concept of the essay during the civil rights movement.
