This year, 60 mooring spots in the Charles River Basin are up for grabs. The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) began accepting applications on March 21 for a lottery to award the spots, which are on the Cambridge side of the river just downstream from the Longfellow Bridge.
These mooring locations are for private pleasure boats only—so owners of commercial boats or boats for hire need not apply. The catch is boat owners have to obtain and install their own Coast Guard-approved mooring. Also, DCR will charge boat owners $6 per linear foot of their boat for the season. However, if you get one of DCR’s mooring spots in the lottery, a small dingy dock will be available for your use.
The deadline to apply for the lottery is April 29, and you must include a current Massachusetts boat registration with your application. Lottery winners will be notified within ten days of the drawing.
If you are interested, applications for the 2011 moorings lottery can be obtained by calling DCR at 617-626-1483, or they can be picked up in person at 251 Causeway Street, Boston, 8th floor, M-F 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Once you have filled out the application, send it and a copy of your boat registration to Russ Geer, DCR Park Ranger Marine Unit, 8th floor, 251 Causeway Street, Boston, MA 02114.
